The Pirate Queen
Where: The Hilton Theatre
With: Kevin
Snack: Champagne
Oh... how I wanted to like this. I really did. And it seemed like it was going to have so many perfect ingredients: Pirates! Queens! Music! Dancing! A FREE Ticket! And, it was from the people behind Les Miserables and Miss Saigon - two musicals I love. Unfortunately, my hopes and expectations were not enough to keep me from leaving at intermission. It was just un-fun. The characters were uninteresting, the story was cliche, the songs were full of stupid/obvious rhymes, and the staging was pretty much blah, blah, blah. The best part of the show actually was the dancing (It was river dancing, and I wanted more, more, more!) Luckily, hanging out with Kevin and laughing about how bad the show was turned out to be a BLAST - and, our early exit meant that we were able to meet up with Tom & his friend John who were just finishing dinner. We headed back to Brooklyn, dropped John off at his hotel (yes, there are hotels in Brooklyn!) and grabbed a nightcap at Excelsior. In the end, it was a fun night despite my disappointment in Messers Boublil & Schonberg.

(Park Avenue, btwn 49th & 50th Streets)
beef tenderloin
salmon
asparagus
polenta
wine
coffee
Ooh - fancy, right?? Well, the reason I ate at such a decadent place was because I was volunteering at a benefit for inMotion - an organization that provides free legal and social services to low-income women in New York City. The benefit was an auction & my job was to run around finding winning bidders to get their credit cards before they could leave the building. Besides being fun just for the sake of doing something that supports a very worthwhile cause, it was also exciting because during the course of the evening, I was actually handed two (not one, two) black Amex cards.

* STREETS OF AUSTIN *
(Lunch/Dinner - 3/19)
pizza
tacos
more pizza
tequila & soda
Saturday was a LONG day... lunch didn't really happen, and neither did dinner. It was just a snack every few hours or so.
* THE AUSTIN AIRPORT *
(Breakfast - 3/18)
ham, egg & cheese on a croissant
coffee
The coffee was literally to keep me from falling asleep while walking to my 7am flight.
* MEI MEI & RANDY'S *
(Lunch 3/18)
chips & onion dip
stuffed artichoke
salami & cheese
olives
pizza bread
calamari salad
penne w/vodka sauce
beard papa cream puff (courtesy of Willy & Ramon)
pelegrino
wine
coffee
Back in NY!!! I was exhausted, but after the previous few days of non-stop activity, it was great just relaxing with friends.
* TOM'S *
(Dinner 3/18)
pot-roast
roasted potatoes
green beans
apple pie (courtesy of Sean/Mark/Ed)
wine
Sunday night in front of the TV never felt better. Tom made a great meal and it felt SO good to be sitting and doing nothing.
* BMG COLUMBIA HOUSE VENDING MACHINE *
(Breakfast 3/19)
peanuts
coffee
A fairly slow start, combined with a very slow train resulted in this pathetic meal. Luckily I was still too tired to care!
* SEATLLE CAFE *
(Lunch 3/19)
grilled chicken/spinach salad
Ok, I think I'm finally getting back on track... with my eating AND my meal posts! YAY!

Ok - it's been crazy few days in Austin, and today is the last one here for me. I've seen great music with only a couple small exceptions... it's an insane scene that really has to be experienced to be understood. I've got tons more band shots to post... and I'll put together a list of everyone I've seen along with a best/worst list once I get back to NY and get back to a normal daily schedule.

* IRON WORKS BBQ *
(100 Red River, Austin TX)
the sampler plate (BBQ beef ribs, brisket & sausage w/baked beans, pickles, bread, onion, & potato salad)
side of fries
diet coke
There really was just no other proper way to start off my trip than to get a big plate of Texas bbq. Especially after this morning's pitiful breakfast. The meats were delicious. I didn't eat the potato salad since I got the fries, but it came with the plate. Also, the beans were kind of... blah. At some point a photo of the meal should show up on the blog, but there seems to be some technical problem, so I'll try later.

It's SXSW (South by Southwest) time & I'm heading to Austin tomorrow! I've never been there and I'm really looking forward to the trip - both because of the event and just to see Austin in general.
For anyone who isn't familiar, SXSW is basically like the Sundance Film Festival for the music industry. For 4 days & nights, hundreds of bands from over 30 countries will be performing at over 50 venues around the downtown area. It should be fun, crazy and exhausting. I will be posting from the road - so stay tuned!
Oh yeah, and if anyone lives in or has been to Austin, let me know if there are any places I have to eat!

I don't know if this was a recipe Tom got from somewhere, or something he just made up... but it was GOOOOOOD. We split a cupcake that Tom picked up from this place called Bugers & Cupcakes(!!) over the weekend and it was really good. baja burrito
This is maybe my favorite burrito in the world (except for possibly the one I always got on late night "La Bamba" runs when I was at University of Illinois.) Here's how I ordered it today: "Baja on whole wheat, no rice, black beans, chicken & mushrooms. With everything except yogurt instead of sour cream." Then when it's ready, I top it off with some of the hot salsa they offer at their little toppings station.
It was YUMMY!

We had 6 again this week and I was very excited to play. After winning a game last week - I was SURE that we were on a roll and things were about to turn around... but no, we lost the match (and all 3 games) again. Still, there were definitely some good moments, and I know that we will surprise one of these other teams very soon!
So now we're 0-6 in matches (2-16 in games.) And we're still last.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I'm a big fan of The Amazing Race. The show has just started it's all-star season and it was ok the first week. However, last week was great - mainly because some of the contestants are C-R-A-Z-Y!
At the top of the list is my buddy Mirna:
She is insane. Whether she was screaming at a cab driver to take all her money, screaming at other teams, screaming at her dwarf cousin & partner Charla, or explaining why she's such a great person - she definitely proved herself to be prime time material last Sunday.
See for yourself in this post cab-driver-incident outtake from last week's episode.

Well, last night's match was fun. There were only 6 of us, and I got to play middle the whole time which was great. Overall, I was happy with how I played (my passing was on, I had some good blocks, a couple good saves and a couple kills,) BUT... we still lost the match. We should have won the first game, we were actually ahead, but lost focus on the last few points. However, we did win the third game in a big way & that felt very very nice.
So now we're 0-5 in matches (2-13 in games.) We're still last in the division, but we have nowhere to go but up!

Tasty, but not the best choice. I thought it was actually going to be a little more high-end, but as soon as I walked in the place I realized it was essentially one of my old favorites, YIP'S, with a new name. It was the same cafeteria set-up, same crap. You may ask, "Why didn't you just turn around and walk out, David?" Well, then I would have had to look around for somewhere else, and today that thought was less appetizing than the food.
